Quinta dos Espinhosos 2018

Quinta dos Espinhosos 2018

White Wine | Regional Minho | 12,5% vol.

Quinta dos Espinhosos is an estate wine, made of a blend of Avesso and Chardonnay, produced from vineyards in organic production mode. The vintage of 2018 is the first vintage of Quinta dos Espinhosos as an organic certified wine.

The winter of 2017 was relatively dry. However, this trend inverted completely during the 2018 Spring, which registered far greater levels of precipitation than the average levels of rainfall for this time. These rains forced us to apply treatments in the vineyards for mildew and oidium. Also, in the beginning of March we had hailstorms in Quinta dos Espinhosos, which prejudiced the yields of some parcels.

Summer, on the other hand, was hot and dry, the average temperatures in August and September being much higher than the annual averages for these months. Despite the intense heat, the vines went thru the season without any issues.

The harvest of Quinta dos Espinhosos 2018 started early, on 11 of October, in consequence of the hot summer.

Grapes Varieties

Avesso

Avesso 50%

A high quality white grape variety that leads to full bodied aromatic and flavorful portuguese white wines. This varietal can result in wines with citrus and tree fruit aromas along with subtle hints of tropical fruit. Avesso has medium-sized bunches with large yellow and green berries. High-yielding and rustic, this grape is planted primarily in Baião, in the vinho verde region of Portugal.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay 50%

One of the world’s most recognized and cherished grape variety from which highly aromatic and complex white wines are made from. A green-skinned grape variety with great acidity that can result in portuguese white wines with nice fruit flavors, buttery mouthfeel and notes of minerality. The Chardonnay grape is small with medium-sized bunches. An outstanding varietal with great potencial in Baião, a location in the vinho verde region.
